The grievances of the insured in 2015

According to South African statistics, 9 784 complaints were filed against non life insurers in 2015, compared to 10 253 in 2014. The discontent award went to motor insurance with 48% of the total number of complaints filed. It is followed by decennial liability insurance (18%) while homeowners' insurance came third with 8%. The other non life classes of business accounted for 26% of the complaints.

The high number of complaints reveals that some clauses in the insurance contracts remain ambiguous and rather unclear. The difficulties associated with understanding the policies and the problems of interpretation explain this phenomenon.
