Train crash

February 25, 2011

The head-on collision of the two passenger trains in Buizingen, on February 15, 2010, claimed the lives of 19 people and wounded 177. It is the most serious train accident that happened in Belgium since the 1954 derailment which killed 20 people and injured 40. Mechanical failure or human error is thought to be the causes of the tragedy. According to the legislation in force, the carrier, SNCB (Belgium's national railway company) is responsible for the safety of the passengers during the entire journey. Being its own insurer, SNCB will, therefore, have to indemnify bodily and material damages.
