Tanzania: Farmers endowed with new insurance scheme for their crops

December 05, 2016

Airtel Tanzania, Agriculture and Climate Risk Enterprise (Acre), Seed Co Tanzania and UAP Insurance Tanzania have signed a cooperation agreement aimed at marketing a crop insurance policy. The product, baptized “Linda Mbegu” or Insure your crops, is the first of its kind to be distributed in Tanzania. It has been designed to protect farmers against the consequences of rainfall shortages.

The data gathered show that peasants are rarely investing in quality seeds because of the poor perspectives for the future, in particular. The new coverage designed to provide farmers with compensation in the event of rainfall shortages is likely to help them invest differently and expect higher income.
