According to the Directorate General of Forests (DGF), 811 wildfires have broken out across 32 Wilayas (Governorates) in Algeria since the beginning of 2025. These fires have destroyed 40 001 hectares of forest, scrubland, and brush.
The most affected regions are in the north and center of the country, where extreme weather conditions, including drought, strong winds, and high temperatures, have contributed to the spread of fires.
These disasters have caused significant material and ecological damage, particularly in remote areas that are difficult to access for rapid response.
The DGF reports that more than 90% of these fires are caused by human activity.
To curb the rising number of wildfires, local authorities are urging increased public awareness campaigns and stricter controls on human activities in forested areas.
