Only 40% of the drivers are covered by an insurance policy

According to an official from Santam company, only 40% of motorists are covered by insurance. This accounts for the 12 billion ZAR (1.93 billion USD) annual losses caused to the economy due to road accidents, 7 billion ZAR (1.13 billion USD) are borne by insurers. Statistics also reveal that for 100 000 km covered, mortality rate is ten times as high in South Africa as in Great Britain and Australia.
