Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max crash: Boeing to pay 28.45 million USD to victim's widower

boeingIn a ruling issued on 12 November 2025, the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago ordered Boeing to pay compensation to Soumya Bhattacharya, the widower of one of the victims of the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines 737 Max crash.

The US manufacturer must pay 28.45 million USD to Mr. Bhattacharya.

Dozens of additional civil lawsuits are expected to follow in the coming months.

Between April 2019 and March 2021, several other cases between Boeing and victims’ families were settled out of court through financial agreements.

As a reminder, on 10 March 2019, Ethiopian Airlines flight ET302 from Addis Ababa to Nairobi crashed six minutes after takeoff, killing all 157 people on board.

The Boeing 737 Max has been involved in two fatal accidents, the Lion Air crash in Indonesia in 2018 and the Ethiopian Airlines crash in 2019, resulting in a total of 346 fatalities.
