The authorities remind insurers of fair-play

A recent ruling handed down by Pietermaritzburg’s High Court is likely to have significant impact on the settlement of claims. For some specialists, this judgment requires that the insured report to their insurer any minor damage to the insured vehicle, even a single scratch on the body. Failure to comply with this obligation means the insured may see his claim rejected. This move has shifted the burden of proof from the insurer to the insured. The authorities are trying, however, to put pressure on the insurance companies to prevent them from penalizing customers and to make them comply with a code of conduct. .
