In 2024, the African reinsurance market generated 6.269 billion USD in premiums, representing 1.6% of global underwriting.

The non-life segment dominated the market, accounting for 87.5% of premiums in 2024.

The African reinsurance market remains highly concentrated, with the top ten players capturing 73% of total premiums.

The market is led by Africa Re, Munich Reinsurance Company of Africa (MRoA), Atlantic Re (formerly SCR), Compagnie Centrale de Réassurance (CCR), and Swiss Re Africa, together underwriting 51% of Africa’s reinsurance premiums in 2024.

Based on premium volume, South Africa ranks as the largest reinsurance market in Africa, representing 34% of the continent’s written premiums in 2024.

The average return on equity (ROE) for the sector stands at 12.9%.
