Zimbabwe: New joint-venture in microinsurance

December 01, 2016

Blue Marble Microinsurance is a joint-venture in operation since 2015. It has been launched by a consortium of nine companies: AIG, Aspen Insurance Holdings, Guy Carpenter & Cie, Marsh & McLennan, Hamilton Insurance Group, Old Mutual, Transatlantic Re, XL Catlin and Zurich Insurance Group.

Blue Marbles Microinsurance is proposing an insurance against drought for the benefit of corn producers settled in the south of Africa. This service will, henceforth, be extended to Zimbabwe, enabling peasants in particular to support credits sustained during the purchase of seeds, fertilizers, lime and other goods during bad years. New technologies, such as rain sensors, will be utilized in order to measure rainfall deficit.
