Maritime piracy: quiet reigning over Somali coasts

February 09, 2016

Since May 2012, time of the first attack staged against a commercial boat by pirates on the Somali coasts, a rather quiet situation has been noticed by the International Marine Bureau for the third year in a row.

The disappearance of piracy acts in the Gulf of Aden and its region has been accounted for by the presence of international marine patrols, the stability of the Somali government, and compliance with the security measures binding all boats and ships navigating in the zone. The latter are strictly required to make recourse to private security companies.
