Increasing acts of maritime piracy

February 23, 2011

In 2008, 293 acts of maritime piracy have been perpetrated throughout the world versus 263 in 2007, that is, an 11% increase. The Gulf of Aden area alone has reported 111 incidents, that is, more than a 50% increase in comparison with 2007. This rising criminality along the Somali shore is accounted for by insecurity in the region and political instability.

Nigeria's territorial waters are ranking second risky area with 40 incidents listed in 2008.
